On-site experiences at Rea Rea Lodge

Guests have access to all areas of the property. There’s abundant space for the children to run free, with rolling grounds complete with a treehouse and swing. Follow one of the private bushwalking trails through unspoiled native forest and along the creek to pristine swimming holes, encountering wildlife such as kangaroos, wombats and echidnas, along the way.

Visit the village

Uncover the historical treasures of the quaint Kangaroo Valley township which dates back to 1870, with its colonial shopfronts and heritage-listed pub. Completed in 1898, Hampden Bridge heralds your arrival into town as you cross the Kangaroo River from Rea Rea Lodge, with its sandstone turrets and arches reminiscent of a medieval castle.

The Kangaroo Valley General Store and Newsagent is your one-stop shop for essentials while Sweet As Kangaroo Valley is a must-visit destination for all things delicious and sweet. The Pioneer Village Museum is a great way of learning about the local history and lovely for a wander through the grounds.

Wining, dining and produce

The region is a foodies’ paradise replete with world-class cuisine, vineyards, cooking schools and fresh seasonal produce. Start the day with a coffee from locals’ favourite The General Café, loved for its organic sourdough and beautiful local fare served up by a hatted chef. Pick up gourmet goods, including house made, fresh, pastries, for a picnic at Hampden Deli or pop in for a glass of wine next door at Hampden Wine Lounge.

Be sure to stop by one of the region’s oldest pubs, The Friendly Inn Hotel, for a classic Aussie pub lunch or dinner, and a cold beverage in the beautiful beer garden with stunning valley views. On the second Sunday of the month, the Kangaroo Valley Farmers Markets are held in the pub’s grounds, supporting local growers and makers.

Within the luxurious Wildes Boutique Hotel, Wildes Dining is the perfect environment to experience the region’s exceptional food in elegant surrounds. Or head over to Terre y Mare Pizzeria for an easy yet authentic pizza!

And if wine’s your tipple, the 20 minute drive to Yarrawa Estate on Upper River Rd is well worth it, taking you to a gorgeous lakeside vineyard where you can sample award-winning drops paired with a cheese plate as you gaze over fertile fields. Further afield you'll find an outstanding wine trail through the Southern Highlands including Centennial Winery, Bendooleys Estate and Mount Ashby as highlights. For wine with stunning coastal views, visit Two Figs winery in Berry or further down the South Coast you can find Silos and Cupitts.

Kayak or canoe on the river

Embark on a self-guided journey along the Kangaroo River, navigating the calm waters and gentle rapids for an idyllic perspective on the valley’s spectacular scenery, rainforest and wildlife. Kangaroo Valley boasts several excellent operators for hiring kayaks and canoes. We recommend Valley Outdoors or Kangaroo Valley Adventure Company as great options for discovering this pristine waterway.

Choose your own adventure

From mountain biking, bushwalking, rock climbing and abseiling to canoeing, kayaking and wildlife viewing, Kangaroo Valley Adventure Company’s guided tours are a wonderfully adventurous way of experiencing all that the area has to offer. For adventures on horseback, Kangaroo Valley Horses offers beautiful rides through 360 acres of bush and farmland including stunning river crossings.

Local flora and fauna

The region’s national parks, rainforests, rivers, waterfalls and mountains provide home to countless native animals.  Experience the scenic wonders of Cambewarra Mountain Lookout, perched high on the summit of the Cambewarra Range, or wander through the various ecosystems on your hike up to Drawing Room Rocks. Both outlooks provide breathtaking views from Coolangatta Mountain to Jervis Bay National Park. Observe the abundant wildlife, from king parrots and lyrebirds to majestic wedge tailed eagles.

For an easy flat hike head out to Three Views walking track which incorporates three cliff-edge viewing points, each boasting a different sight. Walk one or all three depending on your energy levels! You’ll enjoy incredible views of Lake Yarrunga, Tallowa Dam and the Shoalhaven River and gorges, along with spectacular wildflower glimpses in late winter and spring. The track’s almost completely flat, so it’s suitable for all fitness levels. An abundance of wildlife also makes this a great track for walking with older children, though you might find you need to break it up into smaller sections. Hear the roar and feel the mist of the mighty Fitzroy Falls from a wheelchair friendly lookout only two minutes from the Visitor Centre, or explore 10km of walking tracks with spectacular views.

With its wide-open spaces and lush setting on the banks of Kangaroo River, the Bendeela Recreational Area is an easy place to spot wombats and Eastern grey kangaroos at dusk.
